The Blue Earth Project
Reiki for Planet Earth and All Its Inhabitants
The Blue Earth Project is a simple Reiki practice created by Reiki Master Marta Getty and carried forward today by her student Chiara Corte. At its center is a small representation of Planet Earth held in the hands, Reiki, and an intention:
“I direct this energy of Reiki to heal and reconcile Planet Earth and all its inhabitants.”
The practice does not ask us to decide what should happen in a particular war, environmental crisis, political conflict, natural disaster, or other situation. Instead, we hold Planet Earth and all its inhabitants within Marta’s intention and allow Reiki to flow without prescribing the result.
Planet Earth in Our Hands
The physical Earth is an important part of the practice. Marta used a small globe and later began distributing blue Earth marbles that could be held easily in the hands. The object gives us something tangible through which to hold the whole Earth within our awareness.
The marble is not required. A stone, seed, nut, fruit, globe, or another natural object can represent Planet Earth. What matters is not the particular object, but what it represents.
From the beginning, Blue Earth was intended to be something people could practice for themselves, wherever they were. Chiara continues that simplicity today.
Planet Earth and All Its Inhabitants
The last words of Marta’s intention are especially important: “and all its inhabitants.”
All its inhabitants does not mean human beings alone. It includes people, animals, plants, ecosystems, and the many forms of life with which we share this planet.
This changes the perspective of the practice. We are not standing outside the Earth, sending Reiki to something separate from ourselves that we believe needs to be fixed. We are inhabitants too. Our own relationship with the Earth, with one another, and with the other forms of life around us is included in the healing and reconciliation.
Chiara has described this as one of the discoveries that emerged through years of practicing Blue Earth: what begins as a practice for healing the Earth can also become a practice through which our own relationship with the Earth changes. In the first Blue Earth gathering with NYC Reiki Center students, she put it simply:
Why Reconciliation?
Marta did not say only “heal Planet Earth.” Her intention was to heal and reconcile Planet Earth and all its inhabitants.
Reconciliation begins with relationship. Chiara traces the word to the idea of coming together again, meeting again, and speaking again. It does not require us to decide beforehand what the outcome should be. It begins with a willingness to enter relationship where separation or conflict exists.
That is one reason Blue Earth does not concentrate Reiki on the outcome we want in a particular conflict or crisis. We hold the larger whole: Planet Earth and all its inhabitants.
Marta Getty and Chiara Corte
Chiara Corte was Marta Getty’s student and the last Reiki Master initiated by her. Chiara began First Degree with Marta in 2005, took Second Degree in 2007, and became a Reiki Master in 2019. Over many years Chiara organized Marta’s classes in Italy, and as their relationship deepened, Marta increasingly stayed with Chiara and her family. During approximately the last seven years of Marta’s life, she spent much of her time there.
Much of what Marta transmitted to Chiara came through this close relationship, in conversations, walks, everyday life, and Reiki practice. Blue Earth grew out of that shared exploration.
After Marta’s death in 2020, Chiara continued Blue Earth as part of her own practice. Through Reiki Home, she later began leading the Peace Upon the Blue Earth Circle online each month, carrying the practice into a growing international community.
Blue Earth Today
Blue Earth is part of Marta Getty’s legacy, but it is not simply a historical project.
It is a living practice.
People around the world can hold the Earth in their hands, practice independently, join others in practice, and discover for themselves what may unfold through returning again and again to Marta’s simple intention:
