At 86 years old, Patricia Elisabeth Carroll is a living testament to the enduring power of Reiki. A devoted student of John Harvey Gray, one of the earliest Western Reiki Masters, Patricia spent seven years under his guidance—from 1984 to 1991—before being initiated as a Reiki Master herself. Her story is one of deep commitment, quiet strength, and spiritual devotion.
Recently, we had the privilege of interviewing Patricia in a rare and moving conversation hosted by fellow Reiki Master and fellow student of John Harvey Gray, Brian Brunius. Together, they reflect on their teacher, their path, and the enduring heart of Reiki.
A Legacy of Patience and Practice
Patricia’s Reiki path began in 1984, a time when Reiki was still spreading quietly and slowly across the U.S. It wasn’t a weekend certification—it was a years-long immersion. In 1991, after seven years of study and spiritual deepening, she became a Reiki Master.
Her teachings have influenced many. Patricia taught and led workshops across the country, including at the well-respected Kripalu Institute, where she helped guide countless practitioners and future Masters. Many Reiki healers in the community today can trace part of their learning and inspiration back to her.
A Living Lineage
Patricia is not only a student of Reiki—she is also a carrier of its tradition. Her work in retreats, workshops, and one-on-one sessions over the decades has left a lasting impact on the Reiki community. And her presence today is a reminder that healing is a lifelong journey.
Reiki is not just a healing practice—it is a sacred lineage passed from teacher to student, heart to heart. Patricia Elisabeth Carroll’s journey is part of that direct line, beginning with Mikao Usui, the founder of Reiki in Japan, followed by Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, who helped systematize the practice, and then Hawayo Takata, who brought Reiki to the West. From Takata came John Harvey Gray, one of her original 22 Reiki Masters and a key figure in spreading Reiki across the United States. Patricia studied under John for seven years, from 1984 to 1991, before becoming a Reiki Master herself. Today, she stands as a humble and powerful link in that unbroken chain, continuing to carry and share the essence of Reiki as it was taught to her—with clarity, devotion, and love.

The value of patience and integrity on the Reiki path

Why Her Story Matters Today
In a world that often prioritizes speed, productivity, and performance, Patricia’s story reminds us of a different kind of power—the power of presence, patience, and faith in the unseen. Her life challenges the idea that we need to rush toward mastery, and instead encourages us to slow down, to listen, and to trust the natural rhythm of growth and healing.
For new Reiki students, her story is a grounding force. For seasoned practitioners, it’s a reconnection to the heart of the practice. And for everyone who watches, it’s a reminder that healing is a lifelong path—and a beautiful one.
