Understanding the Three Disciplines of Usui’s Training

Most modern presentations of Reiki focus primarily on healing techniques. Students learn hand positions and treatment methods, but the larger structure of Mikao Usui’s training system is rarely explained.

Usui Reiki Ryoho was not designed as a single healing technique. It was a disciplined path of practice in which healing work and personal cultivation developed together.

Three core disciplines form the foundation of this training:

      • The Reiki Precepts
      • Reiki Meditation
      • Cultivation of kokoro

Together these practices gradually steady the practitioner so Reiki can function naturally and without interference.

1.

The Reiki Precepts

The Reiki Precepts form the ethical and psychological training of Usui’s system. Practiced daily, they gradually reduce anger, worry, and other disturbances that interfere with clarity.

2.

Reiki Meditation

Jyoshin Kokyu-ho

Reiki meditation stabilizes the body and mind so the practitioner becomes receptive to Reiki. Through regular practice the hands become naturally responsive and Reiki begins to function without effort.

3.

Cultivation of kokoro

At the center of Usui’s training was the refinement of kokoro, the integrated condition of the heart-mind. When kokoro becomes steady, Reiki practice becomes steady.

Rather than focusing only on techniques, Usui taught Reiki as a path of self-cultivation in which the practitioner gradually refines the condition of their inner life.
